An official source at the Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities ruled out the ministry’s ability to build one million units by 2018, reported Invest Gate.

The previously set schedule is to be pushed by more than a year, to be completed by 2019.

The source cited the ministry’s inability to provide the infrastructure and facilities, pointing to the acute shortage of private funding and lack of resources as reasons for the delay.

The one million residential units were pledged during former Housing Minister Fathi El Baradie’s tenure.

The ministry announced the one million residential units for social housing purposes in 2011, with a targeted completion date by 2016.  The shortage of funding and the political instability has stymied implementation, and has pushed the delivery to 2017.
