Ministry of Housing Organizes Symposium on PPPs for Climate Change Mitigation

The Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities organizes a symposium, titled “Public-Private Partnerships for Climate Change Mitigations,” on the sidelines of the Biodiversity Day at COP27’s Green Zone, Invest-Gate reports.

Abdel Khaliq Ibrahim, Assistant to the Minister of Housing for Technical Affairs, notes that the symposium discusses cities’ contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and the threats of climate change to the urban infrastructure.

The event also discusses the value of investment needed to fill the gap between the supply and the growing demand for infrastructure services and the additional investment required for the mitigation of climate change, he adds.

Ibrahim says that the symposium adopts offering projects under the PPP model to achieve the development goals for infrastructure, along with mitigation of climate changes.

For his part, Walid Abbas, Assistant to the Minister of Housing for the Affairs of the New Urban Communities Authorities (NUCA), explores Egypt’s experiment in building new urban communities since 1979.

Abbas adds that Egypt launches the new smart cities strategies in 2014 through the PPP model. He reveals that the strategy allows for the implementation of 67 projects on 13,000 sqm with an investment cost of EGP 1.1 tn, creating 200,000 jobs.

Mohamed Nada, the Senior Urban Specialist at World Bank Group, demonstrates the plan for transformation towards smart cities in terms of asset management, including the use of drones in video shooting of the cities and the analysis thereof.

Amr Elhamy, CEO of The TSFE Tourism, Real Estate, and Antiquities Subfund, states that the sub-fund applies environmental sustainability standards for projects offered in partnership with the private sector, referring to the Tahrir Complex development project in which the sub-fund requires bidders to apply sustainability standards and receive international certification thereof.
