Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has inaugurated the first of three 132/11 kilovolt main substations for the Dubai Expo 2020, Construction Week Online reports.

The authority completed ‘Mobility,’ one of three 132/11 kV main substations responsible for generating electricity for the Dubai Expo 2020 in January.

The other two substations, ‘Sustainability’ and ‘Opportunity,’ are currently under construction. All three substations, named after the three sub-themes of the Expo, are being built at a total cost of USD 114m.

The construction of  ‘Mobility’ substation began in July 2015, at a total cost of USD 47 mn.

DEWA aims to generate half of the energy to be used by the exhibition from clean and renewable energy sources, to promote sustainability, a key pillar of the exhibition.

‘Sustainability,’ the second 132/11 kilovolt main substation worth USD 28 mn is 95% complete and is due to be inaugurated later this month, according to Construction Week Online.

The final substation, ‘Opportunity,’ valued at a total cost of USD 39 mn, is 91% complete and is also expected to be inaugurated this month.

The World Expo, to be held in Dubai in 2020, will be the first to be held in the Middle East and North Africa region. UAE selected the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”, sub-themes being Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity.
