Minister of Housing Reviews Efforts to Localize Manufacturing of Components Used in Drinking Water and Wastewater Treatment Projects

Monitoring Efforts to Localize the Manufacturing of Utility Project Components
Engineer Randa El-Menshawy, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, held a meeting to follow up on efforts to localize the manufacturing of components used in drinking water and wastewater treatment projects. The meeting was attended by Engineer Ahmed Omran, Deputy Minister of Housing for Utilities, along with ministry officials and heads of affiliated entities in the utilities sector, Invest-Gate reports.

The Importance of Deepening Local Manufacturing and Supporting the National Economy
At the beginning of the meeting, Engineer Randa El-Menshawy emphasized the importance of deepening local manufacturing of utility project components, as it helps reduce reliance on imports, lower costs, and enhance the efficiency of operation and maintenance. It also supports the national economy and creates new job opportunities, in line with the state’s focus on localizing industries, in implementation of the political leadership’s directives to promote local manufacturing, as stated in the statement issued on March 24.

Government Measures to Enhance Local Manufacturing and International Cooperation
During the meeting, Engineer Ahmed Omran reviewed the measures taken, including coordination with various state entities to encourage local manufacturing of electromechanical components. This comes alongside cooperation with global industrial entities to transfer expertise and establish new factories داخل the Arab Republic of Egypt to meet local needs and expand exports to African countries and the Arab region.

Assessing Project Needs and Updating Technical Specifications
Engineer Ahmed Omran pointed out that the requirements of projects for mechanical and electrical components needed for implementing drinking water and wastewater treatment projects over the next five years have been identified and estimated. These needs were discussed with companies and factories, and technical specifications were updated in coordination with specialized entities to overcome obstacles and encourage local manufacturing according to the highest quality standards.

Supporting Desalination Projects and Rehabilitating Electromechanical Components
The presentation also addressed the needs of existing and ongoing seawater desalination plants within the framework of the strategic plan for seawater desalination until 2050. It also covered mechanisms for approving certain local products, as well as efforts to rehabilitate and repair electromechanical components in plants through the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater and the New Urban Communities Authority, in addition to identifying industries that require expansion in localization to support project implementation.

Directives to Follow Up on Implementation and Achieve Sustainable Development Goals
At the conclusion of the meeting, Engineer Randa El-Menshawy stressed the importance of regular follow-up on progress rates in this file and setting clear performance indicators to measure results and ensure targets are achieved. This supports the state’s strategy towards sustainable development and enhances the level of drinking water and wastewater services across the Republic, while adhering to standard specifications and ensuring product quality, contributing to the efficient and high-quality implementation of utility projects and maximizing the benefit from local capabilities.
