BESIX, Orascom Award EUR 11 mn Contract for Grand Egyptian Museum

Egypt’s Ministry of Culture and the joint venture (JV) of Brussels-based Besix and Orascom Construction has chosen the Spanish-based Acciona Producciones y Diseño (APD) for the technical museographic development of four exhibition halls at the Grand Egyptian Museum, in a contract worth EUR 11 mn, Invest-Gate reports.

APD, which will be in charge of an area of 12,000 square meters, aims to turn it into the world’s largest archaeological museum with 45,000 pieces, of which 25,000 have never been exhibited before, according to a company’s statement.

APD will incorporate different exhibition elements, including graphics, models, life-sized reproductions and exhibition and staging lighting to bolster the story told by the museum and contextualize the archaeological pieces, in addition to making a 3D scan of Tutankhamun’s burial chamber, granting an exact replica of the original to be created for the museum’s visitors.

Spanning across a land area of 50 hectares, the Grand Egyptian Museum is situated two kilometers from the Giza pyramids, in which some halls is expected to open to visitors by 2019, with the final grand opening in late 2020.

APD has been responsible for the “Sound and Light Show” project in Egypt’s Abu Simbel Temple, where the history of the temple is retold and projected on the walls in different languages, since 1999.
