Air Quality in NAC Exceeds International Safety Standards by Twice the Permitted Levels

As part of the Administrative Capital for Urban Development’s (ACUD) commitment to sustainability indicators in all aspects, including environmental safety, and in cooperation with the General Administration of Air Quality at the Ministry of Environment, air quality indicators were monitored in the New Administrative Capital (NAC) from August 1 to the end of November, Invest-Gate reports.

This monitoring was conducted using mobile laboratories affiliated with the National Network for Monitoring Air Pollutants at several locations within the NAC.

The process included measurements of solid particles, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone, as well as the prevailing wind speed and direction. All monitoring results were within the legal limits permitted.

The average readings for solid particles were 54 micrograms per cubic meter of air, while the maximum legal limit is 150 micrograms/m³.

Sulfur dioxide levels were recorded at 7 micrograms/m³, with a legal limit of 125 micrograms/m³.

Nitrogen dioxide levels reached 71 micrograms/m³, while the legally permissible limit is 150 micrograms/m³. Ozone levels averaged 30 micrograms/m³, compared to the legally permissible limit of 180 micrograms/m³.

It was also found that the prevailing wind direction was north-easterly, with an average speed of 4 meters per second.

In this context, Eng. Khaled Abbas, Chairman and Managing Director of ACUD, stated, “These readings are an expected result of the company’s commitment to a general plan for the city that aims to create an integrated environmental system. This includes increasing the area of green spaces to ensure that the individual’s share reaches 15 sqm— the largest per capita share in Egypt—while expanding the use of clean and renewable energy at an unprecedented population density rate of up to 180 individuals per feddan. Additionally, we are promoting environmentally friendly means of transportation, most of which operate on electricity or natural gas.”
