Bahrain is set to become a global leader in the ecotourism field as it plans to open the world’s largest eco-friendly underwater theme park, coming up within the kingdom’s master-planned island city, Diyar Al Muharraq, Invest-Gate reports.
Expected to open in August, the 100,000-square-meter project is being undertaken by the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, in partnership with the Supreme Council for Environment and private sector, according to a statement by Bahrain News Agency (BNA) on June 9.
It will boast exceptional dive spots, including several structures such as a submerged 70-meter Boeing 747 as a centerpiece, in addition to a replica of a traditional Bahraini pearl merchant’s house and artificial coral reefs, attempting to boost coral growth and the development of a sustainable habitat for marine-life to thrive.
Lauding the new development, President of the Supreme Council for Environment Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa highlighted, “The underwater park highlights the kingdom’s commitment to preserving its marine habitat by incorporating the highest international environmental standards in this eco-friendly project.”
“Moreover, the project will become an international tourist attraction, given its large area, location and unique experience for diving enthusiasts,” he noted.
