Sayed Ismail, Deputy Minister of infrastructure, Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, participates in a symposium on water desalination in Egypt and the Middle East on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), Invest-Gate reports.

Ismail explores the plan of the water and sewerage sector for the rationalization of water consumption, which includes the use of existing drinking water resources; the safe reuse of treated sewerage water; and the minimization of waste.

Ismail highlights that the number of water desalination plants in Egypt increased to 96 with a total capacity of 1.44 mn cubic meters per day from 36 in 2014 with a capacity of 84,000 cubic meters per day.

The top official demonstrates the housing ministry’s role in the preparation of Egypt’s strategy for water desalination until 2050 to reach a total capacity of 8.85 mn cubic meters per day.

Moreover, Ismail refers to efforts exerted under the Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy (NWFE) program for attracting concessional green financing and provision of technical support and investments to the private sector, including the signing of Letters of Intent (LOIs) to build 5 solar-powered water desalination plant with a total capacity of 525,000 cubic meters per day in 4 governorates with total financings of $625 mn.
