Egypt Allocates 5% of Housing Units for People with Disabilities in New Initiative

Egypt’s Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, Sherif El Sherbini, announced the allocation of 5% of the new housing units the Social Housing and Mortgage Finance Fund offers to citizens with disabilities, Invest-Gate reports.

This initiative falls under the presidential “Housing for All Egyptians” program, providing a significant opportunity for people with special needs.

El Sherbini highlighted that this allocation aligns with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s directives to prioritize the needs of people with disabilities and their families. The state’s vision is to enhance the quality of life for all citizens, especially those with disabilities, through several supportive initiatives, including housing solutions.

For her part, Mai Abdel Hamid, CEO of the Social Housing and Mortgage Finance Fund (SHMFF), stated that a full week would be reserved exclusively for people with disabilities to apply for housing units before the offer is opened to the general public. Eligible applicants will need to provide medical documentation and a valid disability ID.

Abdel Hamid also revealed that 70,000 housing units will be offered under the initiative—60,000 for low-income citizens and 10,000 for middle-income applicants. The SHMFF has received approval from the Cabinet to update the allocation rules for people with disabilities.

The government is also working on modifying the housing program for low- and middle-income citizens, ensuring the process remains smooth and accessible, and aligning with the state’s goals of improving living conditions for all citizens.
