Egypt Launches Sustainable Cities Initiative within COP27 Activities

The Egyptian delegation announces, from the headquarters of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) in Nairobi, the official launch of the Sustainable Cities Initiative during the Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm El Sheikh next November, Invest-Gate reports.

Abdel Khaleq Ibrahim, Assistant Minister of Housing for Technical Affairs, says that the Sustainable Cities Initiative is one of four United Nations-led presidential initiatives. This initiative aims to accelerate the implementation of international development agendas, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement in line with the UN-Habitat plans to boost socially and environmentally sustainable cities and provide suitable housing for people.

In this regard, Ayman Tharwat, deputy director of the Department of Climate, Environment and Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, explains that this initiative is a result of the coordination of the efforts that started during the consultative workshop on July 27th, 2022 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cairo with more than 120 participants, including representatives from national governments, such as Austria, France, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Morocco, Netherlands, Switzerland, and the UK.
