Egyptian Minister Inspects Progress of Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Dam Project in Tanzania

Egyptian Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities Assem El-Gazzar has inspected the progress of the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Dam and Station project in Tanzania, Invest-Gate reports.

The project, executed by the Egyptian alliance of The Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric on the Rufiji River, was accompanied by Ambassador Sherif Ismail, Egypt’s Ambassador to Tanzania; Mahmoud Nassar, Head of the Central Agency for Reconstruction; Ahmed El-Asar, Chairman of the Arab Contractors’ Board of Directors; Hisham Hegazy, Chairman of Elsewedy Electric’s Board of Directors; Hussam Eldin El Refaie, First Deputy Chairman of the Arab Contractors’ Board; Ayman Attia, Board Member of the Company; Darm Deepsy, Project Coordinator; Mohamed Samaha, Deputy Director of the Alliance; and Mohamed Zaki, Deputy Director of the Alliance.

Moreover, El-Gazzar emphasized Egypt’s keen interest in implementing this massive project, reflecting the strong relations between Egypt and Tanzania. The project, regularly monitored by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, aims to contribute to Tanzania’s development by providing essential electricity and controlling the Rufiji River’s floods while preserving the environment.

Furthermore, the project includes a 1,025-meter dam, already completed, with a storage capacity of 34 billion cubic meters. Additionally, it features a hydroelectric power station generating 2,115 megawatts, situated in the Morgoro Nature Reserve southwest of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s commercial capital.

With 33 billion cubic meters stored in the dam’s lake and water reaching 184m above sea level, turbine operations are set to commence at a minimum level of 163m above sea level.
