Egypt’s CAPMAS Reveals Latest Population, Housing Census

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) released the latest census, revealing detailed population and housing trends and figures in the country, Invest-Gate reports.

Census data showed that the total number of buildings in 2017 hit 16.18 mn versus 11.59 mn buildings in 2006 with an increase of 39.5%, CAPMAS Director Abu Bakr El-Gendy announced in a televised conference.

As to the units within these buildings, El-Gendy said there are 43.2 mn residential and non-residential units.

He also stated that 13.5 mn buildings are used for residential purposes while around 833,000 buildings are used for businesses and work purposes.

The governorate with the majority of buildings, according to El-Gendy, is Sharqiya governorate located in the Nile Delta, which comprises 8.9% of the nation’s buildings.

Around 59.5% of the completed buildings are occupied, 22.1% of the completed buildings are partially occupied, and 12.3% of the completed buildings are entirely vacant, El-Gendy added.

The census, which took four years to collect, also revealed that the Egyptian population reached 104.2 mn; 94.98 mn live within Egypt while 9.4 mn live abroad.
