GIZ Egypt Advances “Just Urban Transition” Concept through Bonding 3 Key Projects

GIZ Egypt has organized an event that brought together three esteemed projects: the Capacity Building through Urban Infrastructure Development (CBUID) Project, the National Solid Waste Management Program (NSWMP/EU Green) Project, and the Equal Opportunities and Social Development (EOSD) Project, Invest-Gate reports.

The objective of this collaborative initiative was to highlight the concept of “Just Urban Transition” and showcase the successful partnership between Egypt, Germany, and the European Union. The focus was on promoting resilience and inclusivity in urban development.

The event was attended by Ambassador Christian Berger, the Head of the EU Delegation to Egypt, and Mr. Mario Sander, Head of the Middle East Department at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The projects collectively presented innovative solutions that support equal access to public services and facilities, enhance urban resilience, and promote climate adaptation in cities. The event emphasized the significance of participatory urban development, inclusive social growth, and urban climate resilience, with a special emphasis on local efforts and resilient cities.

Additionally, the event featured a marketplace comprising various interconnected thematic stations or market booths, which aimed to create a narrative around the key principles of the Just Urban Transition. The marketplace themes included Access to Urban Facilities, Community Engagement and Participation, Social Inclusion and Economic Opportunities, the National Solid Waste Management Program/EU Green Project (NSWMP/EU Green) Circular Economy, and Inclusive Climate Resilience.

A distinguished panel convened to discuss the potential implementation of a Just Urban Transition in Egypt, considering the country’s unique socio-economic, cultural, and environmental aspects. The conversation centered on customizing the concept to local needs, developing strategies that prioritize local governance, community participation, and stakeholder collaboration, and exploring holistic approaches to social equity and climate resilience.

Ambassador Christian Berger, the Head of the EU Delegation to Egypt, expressed his delight and appreciation for the current period of urban innovation. He stated, “The European Union is honored to collaborate with Egypt in its pursuit of lasting progress and sustainable urban development. We recognize the capacity of Egypt’s urban centers to drive economic advancement and societal enrichment. Our joint efforts focus on creating inclusive and resilient urban environments that prioritize the well-being of all residents, particularly those in disadvantaged areas.”

Mr. Mario Sander, Head of the Middle East Department at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), highlighted the enduring and strong relationship between Germany and Egypt, characterized by mutual respect and cooperation. He emphasized that beyond political connections, their collaborations aim to address significant issues such as sustainable urban development, recognizing Egypt’s pivotal role in promoting stability and growth in the region.

It is noteworthy that the “Just Urban Transition” initiative strategically aligns itself with the prestigious World Urban Forum 12, scheduled to take place in Cairo in November. This partnership with GIZ Egypt and their expertise allows the initiative to showcase Egypt’s successful solutions to a global audience.
