Housing Minister Follows Up on National Green and Sustainable Urban Development Strategy

Eng. Sherif El Sherbini, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities held a meeting to review progress on Egypt’s National Strategy for Green and Sustainable Urban Development and the steps toward its implementation, Invest-Gate reports.

The meeting included Dr. Abdelkhalek Ibrahim, Senior Assistant for the Minister of Housing, and Dr. Hend Farouh, Director of the Architecture and Housing Research Institute at the Housing and Building National Research Center, along with ministry officials.

El Sherbini emphasized that the strategy is a key pillar of Egypt’s vision for sustainable development and the activation of a green economy. He called for a comprehensive executive plan outlining technical, legislative, and regulatory frameworks to accelerate implementation and broaden its impact across cities and urban communities.

The minister highlighted the strategy’s main goals, which include promoting green real estate projects as a source of national income, advancing green finance and urban sustainability, improving energy, water, and resource efficiency, supporting sustainable urban growth through education and governance, and building climate-resilient green cities.

Dr. Abdelkhalek Ibrahim presented the strategy’s core components, requirements for green urbanism, and a range of proposed incentives for developers who meet the standards. These incentives—categorized by levels of compliance—were developed based on local and international benchmarks and expert consultations. They include financial incentives such as tax reductions and financing facilitation, as well as non-financial perks like streamlined procedures, land allocation priorities, and certified environmental ratings.

Dr. Hend Farouh reviewed the technical criteria required to access these incentives, including the use of water- and energy-saving construction materials, recycled resources, and energy-efficient lighting systems.

The meeting concluded with El Sherbini directing the working teams to finalize the strategy’s detailed implementation plan in preparation for its official launch and the organization of workshops and coordination meetings with relevant stakeholders.
