Housing Minister Monitors Progress of Julius Nyerere Dam, Hydroelectric Station Project in Tanzania

Eng. Sherif El Sherbini, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, held a meeting to follow up on the progress of the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Dam and Station project, Invest-Gate reports.

This project is being implemented by the Egyptian alliance of Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric on the Rufiji River in Tanzania.

The meeting was attended by Eng. Ahmed El-Assar, Chairman of Arab Contractors; Eng. Ahmed Elsewedy, CEO of Elsewedy Electric; Eng. Wael Hamdy, Vice Chairman of Elsewedy Electric; and officials from the Central Agency for Reconstruction.

El Sherbini emphasized that the Egyptian state places great importance on the implementation of this significant project, which reflects the strong relations between Egypt and Tanzania.

He highlighted the capability and potential of Egyptian companies to undertake major projects, particularly for our brothers in Africa. The project is being periodically monitored by Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to achieve development for Tanzania, provide necessary electricity, control flooding of the Rufiji River, and preserve the environment.

During the meeting, El Sherbini reviewed the project’s components, which include the construction of a 1,025-m-long dam with a storage capacity of 32.8 bn m3. It also features a hydroelectric power station with a capacity of 2,115 megawatts, located on the bank of the Rufiji River within a nature reserve in the Morogoro area, southwest of Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital and largest city in Tanzania. Additionally, he reviewed other components of the project.

El Sherbini directed that all achievements made in this significant project be documented through brochures and illustrated documents to preserve the accomplishments of the alliance. In this context, officials from both companies confirmed that the components and stages of the project’s implementation are being documented.

Furthermore, El Sherbini stressed the importance of presenting this remarkable experience at international forums, particularly those organized in African countries, such as the upcoming Energy Conference in Tanzania. This will showcase the capabilities of Egyptian companies to undertake major projects and open new horizons for our companies.
