Sayed Ismail, Deputy Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, recently met with representatives from a global consortium focused on localizing the production of electric water motors, pumps, and smart meters in Egypt, Invest-Gate reports. The discussions also explored implementing smart control and protection systems for residential, commercial, and industrial utilities.
Ismail welcomed the attendees and outlined the government’s efforts to localize electromechanical equipment for water and wastewater projects. He emphasized the private sector’s critical role in supporting these initiatives, particularly in producing smart water meters. “The Ministry of Housing targets providing two million water meters annually to meet the demands of Egypt’s urban development boom,” he noted.
The meeting highlighted cutting-edge technological solutions in smart water meters, discussing customized mechanical and electronic designs tailored to specific applications. The Deputy Minister affirmed the ministry’s full support, through its affiliated bodies, for localizing the production of electromechanical equipment. These efforts align with Egypt’s strategy to prioritize local components and bolster domestic industries.
Consortium representatives expressed keen interest in establishing a local manufacturing presence in Egypt. They outlined plans to use the country as a base for exporting to Central and East Africa and the Gulf region. They also showcased meter designs tailored to Egypt’s market needs, revealing that product testing has been conducted per international standards.
The consortium plans to begin manufacturing within three months, targeting an initial annual production of 250,000 smart meters with over 75% local components, offering competitive pricing to the Egyptian market.
