Alexandria records around 65,000 unlicensed buildings have been developed and completed over the past five years at a cost of EGP 200 bn, Egyptian MP Tarek El Sayed announced on a televised interview on a program called Kalam Masry.
Building violations has become of of Alexandria’s major problems over the past few years due to many contributing factors including property rights and disagreements among many governmental entities like New Urban and Communities Authority NUCA, Ministry of Religious Endowments, Agricultural Reform Authority, and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, EL Sayed added.
Among other factors are the lack of a housing development plan in Alexandria, and unregistered lands in west of Alexandria, making it hard for buyers to obtain license and official rights; hence, they illegally develop such lands.
