Prime Minister Follows Up on Revitalization Projects for Downtown Cairo and Khedivial Cairo

Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving the architectural and urban character of Downtown Cairo and the historic Khedivial Cairo, stressing that development efforts aim to restore and enhance the area’s heritage without altering its identity, Invest-Gate reports.

Madbouly made the remarks during a meeting attended by Housing Minister Eng. Sherif El Sherbinyi, Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities; Cairo Governor, Dr. Ibrahim Saber, and several senior officials from the Urban Development Fund and other relevant agencies. The discussions reviewed progress on heritage restoration, public space enhancement, and cultural activation projects in central Cairo.

El Sherbini outlined the ministry’s vision for revitalizing Khedivial Cairo, with a focus on improving the visual appeal of Downtown while protecting its unique urban character. He highlighted restoration work at Azbakeya Garden, including preservation of heritage trees and historic features such as the lake and pergolas, alongside upgrades to facilities and the surrounding book market. Plans include strict architectural guidelines, unified signage, and continuous maintenance.

The minister also presented proposals for restoring the historic Fencing Club building in coordination with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Organization for Urban Harmony.

Governor Saber reported significant progress in restoring building façades around Ataba Square, with 95% of the work completed, and highlighted the transformation of the “Borsa Triangle” area into an open-air cultural hub through art, heritage preservation, and creative reuse of historic buildings. Development phases have already revitalized Al-Shereifin Street, with work nearing completion on El-Qadi El-Fadel Passage, and preparations underway for the redevelopment of Al-Alfi Street and its side lanes.
