Prime Minister Reviews Progress on Potable Water and Sewage System in East and West Cairo

Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly held a meeting to review the implementation status of the Potable Water and Sewage system in East and West Cairo, Invest-Gate reports.

The meeting was attended by Eng. Sherif El Sherbini, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities; Eng. Ahmed Omran, Deputy Chairman of the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) for Utilities, overseeing the maintenance and monitoring of networks and stations; and other NUCA officials.

Madbouly emphasized that, given the rapid urban development in new cities, particularly in East and West Cairo, the importance of this meeting lies in ensuring that the potable water and sewage systems are adequate to accommodate the significant urban growth expected in the coming period. This effort is part of the state’s commitment to providing the highest quality potable water and sewage services in new urban expansions.

He stressed the importance of closely monitoring the completion dates of various potable water and sewage projects, emphasizing the need to adhere to these timelines to ensure their timely entry into service and to meet implementation targets. This is crucial to avoid problems in the services provided by the potable water and sewage sector, especially given the ongoing urban development.

During the meeting, Eng. Sherif El Sherbini presented the status of the water system in East and West Cairo, highlighting the potable water needs of East Cairo new cities.

He explained that the potable water plants serving these cities will dispense a total of 3 mn m³ per day during the summer of 2025. Current assessments indicate that the needs of these cities will be fully met this summer, particularly with the increased capacity of the New Cairo Water Plant by about 150,000 m³ per day, which has helped bridge the deficit in New Cairo and the New Capital.

Additionally, the capacity of the 10th of Ramadan City Water Plant has increased by approximately 300,000 m³ per day, which will fully meet the needs of Badr City and Capital Gardens.

El Sherbini also addressed the potable water needs in West Cairo new cities. He noted that the potable water plants in Sheikh Zayed and October City currently have a total capacity of approximately 1.4 mn m³ per day, which is planned to increase to 2 mn m³ per day by early 2027.

He presented several permanent solutions being implemented for water distribution, including a series of water distribution lines designed to serve areas benefiting from the third phase of the new purification plant in October City, expected to be operational by mid-summer 2025.

In turn, Eng. Ahmed Omran presented the implementation status of the sewage system in East and West Cairo.

He also presented the current status of the sewage system in West Cairo, detailing the various existing and under-construction treatment plants serving the area, along with their design capacities projected through 2030.
