Scatec Solar has grid-connected and commenced commercial operation for its fifth 65-megawatt solar plant in Egypt, growing the Norwegian company’s total output nationwide to 325 megawatts, Invest-Gate reports.

The new plant will be located at Aswan’s Benban Solar Park, with a final one slated to be operable within months, bringing Scatec Solar’s production at the world’s largest solar power park to 390 megawatts, according to the company’s statement on August 30.

“The estimated annual 870 gigawatt-hours of electricity produced from Scatec Solar’s plants in Benban will avoid about 350,000 tons of [carbon dioxide] emissions annually and provide energy for more than 420,000 Egyptian households,” read the press release.

“Benban solar power plant will be Scatec Solar’s largest project in operation and is the company’s first solar plant with bi-facial solar panels, capturing the sun from both sides of the panels to increase the total clean energy generation,” it added.

In April 2017, Scatec Solar, together with its renewable energy-focused partners KLP, Norfund, and Africa50, had signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian government to deliver electricity from six equal-sized solar plants, adding up 390 megawatts.

Across four continents, the Oslo-listed company currently has 1,128 megawatts in function and is on track to deliver another 776 megawatts, targeting a capacity of 3.5 gigawatts by the end of 2021.
