Sisi Inaugurates EUR 6 bn Power Plants

President Abdel-Fattah El Sisi has inaugurated three EUR 6 bn gas-fired combined cycle power plants with a total capacity of 14,400 megawatts (MW), to boost Egypt’s electricity generation by 50%, in a ceremony on Tuesday, July 24, Invest-Gate reports.

Finalized in a record time, the megaproject is constructed in collaboration with the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, German conglomerate Siemens, and its consortium partners – Orascom Construction and Elsewedy Electric, according to a statement issued by Siemens.

“The record-breaking completion of our mega project in Egypt will not only transform the power landscape in Egypt but will also serve as a blueprint for building up power infrastructure in the Middle East and all over the world,” President and CEO of Siemens AG Joe Kaeser is quoted as saying.

With each having a capacity of 4,800 MW, the power plants are situated in the New Administrative Capital, Burullus town in Kafr El-Sheikh, and Beni Suef.

“This mega project is also setting the benchmark for trustful and reliable cooperation with our customer and our partners. The leadership of President al Sisi and his team in this project has been remarkable,” Kaeser is quoted as saying.

According to Siemens, the mega project marks “the world’s largest combined cycle power plants,” in which it generates enough power to supply up to 40 mn individuals with reliable electricity.

“A single combined cycle power plant block with a capacity of 1,200 MW typically takes approximately 30 months for construction,” Siemens adds in its statement.
